Glass Window Repair

As the years go by and we see the new trends in architecture one thing is clear, the use of more and more windows is becoming almost standard for new building whether they be commercial, industrial or residential. There are various reasons for this but the main reason is that living or working in an environment with lots of natural light is extremely healthy for us as it creates a more relaxed natural atmosphere. On the downside, there will be more glass window repair related maintenance that needs doing.

Today we are spoilt for choice when it comes to the different products and designs that are available for us to choose from. Let’s concentrate on two areas and have a look at each more closely frame types and glass styles.

These are the most common types of window frames used in construction today:

  • Timber Window Frames
  • PVC Window Frames
  • Aluminium Window Frames
  • Steel Window Frames

Timber window frames are made from many different types of wood from your soft woods like, pine, spruce, cedar and Douglas fir to the hardwoods like mahogany, walnut, ash, and oak. The natural grains give an amazing effect when stained or they can be painted in any color. Timber frames will expand and contract due to weather but they are well-insulated frames. There is also a lot of maintenance that needs to be done over the years.

PVC window frames or UPVC are composed of unplasticised polyvinyl chloride that is very rigid and it won’t be fade due to the sun as they are UV stabilized. PVC windows are great for insulation and noise reduction as they are available in double or treble glazing (2 or 3 panes of glass in one window frame). Maintenance would require only cleaning them once a week with no major scrapping and painting.

Aluminium window frames are a metal frame with a powder coating that protects them. They can conduct heat unless installed with an insulating material. Being metal they will last for a long time and also don’t require maintenance apart from a weekly clean.

Steel Window Frames are also powder coated frames made from galvanized steel that are very strong and secure. As with aluminum frames, they require very little maintenance.

There are so many different styles of glass to be found today but here are a few of the most widely used ones:

Transparent glass is your basic see-through glass that is most common. However, if using this type of glass make sure it safety glass no matter where it is used.

Textured glass is exactly what it sounds like, glass that has been molded with various patterns for aesthetic purposes. You can find ribbed, grooved or decorated with flowers and anything else you could think of. Not only is it appealing to the eye but it masks smears.

Seeded glass has lots of bubbles in the glass pane and that is where the name comes from. The bubbles range from small to big.

Frosted glass has been sandblasted to create a translucent surface that prevents you from seeing what is behind it. This is used for bathroom windows, shower doors, and even kitchen cabinets.

replacing glass windowThe frames and styles of glass that are discussed are only a selection of what you can install in your home but as mentioned at the beginning accidents do happen and glass breaks.
